Active Therapeutic Movement (ATM)

The ATM (Active Therapeutic Movement) system, developed by BackProject, is a rehabilitation method designed to restore pain-free movement and improve neuromuscular control through a process of active stabilization retraining. The ATM concept is based on the principle that painful movement often results from poor joint alignment, muscular imbalance, or dysfunctional stabilization patterns. By using adjustable belts and supports, the ATM device realigns the body and temporarily stabilizes key joints, allowing patients to perform previously painful movements without discomfort. The patient performs repetitive exercises in this pain-free posture. This helps the nervous system “relearn” proper motor control in a stable, non-painful context. After several repetitions, patients often find that pain-free movement persists even after the belts are removed, suggesting improved brain-muscle coordination and joint stabilization. Advantages of the ATM:

  • Encourages neuromuscular re-education by reinforcing proper movement patterns.
  • Reduces protective muscle guarding and abnormal motor control caused by pain.
  • Provides instant feedback; patients experience immediate improvement in motion and comfort.
  • Often used for low back pain, SI joint dysfunction, and postural imbalances.
